Originally owned by William Thomas Angove; the founder of Angoves Wines, who obtained this registration in 1906, just 20 years after his arrival in SA from England and the establishement of his wine business. Interestingly, our old records from the plate's first registration spell today’s Tea Tree Gully as "Teatree" Gully.

According to our old records in 1965 the plate was still registered to Angoves and was registered on a 31.5 h.p. Jaguar, either an S type or a MkII.  We are undertaking some further research into the whereabouts of this excellent repeating digit plate. We’d like to hear from the registered owners of SA “77” to fill in the details on the history of this plate.

A brief note on the early history of plates SA “85" through to SA “90”, c.1906

Our rare original records list these five historic numbers as being registered to The Adelaide Motor Works and Garage and they are notated as being “Trade Numbers”. The Adelaide Motor Works and Garage address is listed as Hindmarsh Square in the city, and being trade plates these numbers would have been on many different cars throughout this period.

This plate amazingly did not sell at this tender as it did not reach the set reserve price (SA "15" and SA "30" did sell via the tender), and was subsequently offered at the fixed price of $5000 to anyone who enquired over the counter at the Department of Motor Registration in Wakefield St. We hold some old paperwork with a list of the available plates at this time, and SA "86" is at the top of it. In the early day’s of plates three classes of vehicles were registered in the same numbers and we understand that this trailer has had the number registered to it for years.

Whilst it continues to be registered it can continue to display this fine, low number. Amazing.

The plate was registered on 4.12.64 to a 48.9 h.p. Dodge in the name of the Government Motor Garage,  and then in 1965 on 18th Nov another new 48.9 h.p. Dodge was registered in SA "97".
